Bad Poetry Day IV: Mongooses, Life and Death
It’s been a couple weeks, sadly since the last Bad Poetry Day. Today we’ve got 3 poems… two about the joys of interacting with nature and one touching poem about the magic of creation.

“Mongoose in a Box” by Orin
i’ve got a mongoose in a box
he loves it when you pet his fur
it makes him smile
it makes him purr
he loves it when you take your hands
and cup them way out o’er your ears
and stick your tongue out,
hiss and squirm.

“Death by Tree” by Orin
i hugged a tree
the other day
to see how it would feel
if all the myth and hype
would fill my soul
like the hippies say it will.
i found a tree,
i did not care
there seemed to be trees
scattered everywhere.
i wrapped my arms
as far as i could reach,
i felt the bliss
it was indescribable,
it made me miss the days of
raw earth mother’s kiss.
ecstasy befell me,
i could not hear a sound
but this dance between
me and a tree.
and i could not hear
the chainsaw coming
when the loggers came
to cut it down.

“The Value of a Newborn Life” by Orin
2:00 am,
monday morning
when the moon was at its peak,
the birds had just gone to sleep,
i awake in pain,
it comes, leaves, and comes again.
i call out for a doctor,
a midwife,
but no one’s there.
sweat beading on my forehead,
fingers curled around the bedpost,
holding on by threads and wires
what was i dreaming, now forgotten
–it kicks again
i hold my breath
one
two
three
it beats inside of me to be released
i hunker down
and spread my ass cheeks…
and i fall to the floor
tired, can push no more
there is lies, my child,
one foot long,
brown
two pounds, four ounces.
