Logo Redux: Food Lion [Art]

In the southeast US, one of our local grocery stores is the NC based chain, Food Lion. Ever since I was a kid I’ve always been around Food Lions– it was my parent’s grocery store of choice for most of my childhood. While so many local grocery stores have pretty bad logos or marks that are uninspiring at best, I’ve always been deeply intrigued by the strange cubist griffon that sits atop each Food Lion store. It’s one that seems so timeless yet somehow always modern that I know at some point Food Lion will probably feel compelled to change the logo, which I hope they don’t unless to maybe change the type or put more of a focus on the lion itself… so I decided to play around with it a bit…
For comparison purposes, here’s the Food Lion logo as it really is:

And here’s what I’ve done to it:

A basic treatment, turning the normally blue and yellow logo into an upscale Fifth Avenue type thing.

And naturally it plays well into the urban heraldic thing the kids are so into nowadays.
Where does this highly original lion come from? Frankly I have no idea… according to Wikipedia and Food Lion’s own site, all it says is that Food Lion was originally founded as Food Town, only there was already a Food Town so they changed it to Food Lion. And the rest is lost to history, I guess.
